Parkland in the polder

Golfclub Heemskerk opened in 1988 and lays out 18 holes of parkland golf in a natural corner of the North Holland polder. The clubhouse brasserie has a terrace that looks over the 9th and 18th greens — a nice spot to finish a round and watch other golfers come in.

Golfers rate it warmly. On LeadingCourses it earns 7.4 out of 10 from 334 ratings, and on Hole19 it scores 4.3 out of 5 from 67 golfers. The club describes a course with real character, and its challenging band means the layout asks good questions of your game — a course that rewards thinking your way around, not only hitting far.

Suits: it will please players who like a course with some bite, but it is genuinely welcoming to newcomers too. Golfclub Heemskerk is beginner-friendly, has a shorter practice route to build confidence, and runs a dedicated junior program, so young golfers can start here properly.

For visitors and beginners

You need a valid handicap (GVB) to play, and the club is NGF-affiliated, so your Dutch golf pass is accepted. Visitors are welcome with a member introduction, and you can book your tee time online. A round in the visitor mid-range costs around €60 for 18 holes (€€).

For practice, there is plenty: a driving range, a putting green, a short-game area and practice bunkers. An on-site academy offers lessons too. These are the parts of the course that lower scores fastest, and Heemskerk gives you space to work on all of them.

Marina's note for learners

A course with both a real challenge and a beginner-friendly track is a useful goal to set in a lesson plan — something to build towards as your game grows. I would tell a newcomer to spend time on the practice facilities first: the short-game area and bunkers are exactly where lower scores begin.

Accuracy over power

A parkland course with this kind of character rewards a repeatable swing and a smart short game over raw distance. That is the part of golf I most enjoy teaching — the steady contact and the little shots around the green that turn a good day into a great score.
