Two loops through the Veluwe

Golf- en Businessclub De Scherpenbergh sits in the woods near Lieren, in the middle of the Veluwe. The 18 holes run as two named nines — the Dassenbaan and the Zwaluwenbaan — winding between mature trees, water and gently rolling ground. It is a woodland course, so the trees frame the fairways and shape every tee shot.

From the club’s own description, the setting is pure Veluwe nature: bospartijen, water hazards and a landscape that moves under your feet. Golfers on LeadingCourses give it 8.1 out of 10 from 728 ratings — a strong, steady score that tells you people come back. The layout carries a championship character: it rewards accuracy and thinking your way around more than raw power.

Suits good ball-strikers first — a player who already has a handicap and enjoys placing a shot rather than swinging hard at it. But there is more here than the big course. The site also has a shorter course, a driving range, a putting green and its own golf academy, so a newer golfer has real room to build. A ladies programme and group events round it out, which makes it an easy day for a mixed group of friends.

Playing it as a visitor

You do not need to be a member. De Scherpenbergh is a pay-and-play club, NGF-affiliated, and welcomes visitors all year (checked 25 September 2026). You book your tee time online through descherpenbergh.nl, then simply turn up. A valid handicap — an NGF/GVB card or an equivalent — is asked for on the main 18 holes, so bring yours.

The 18-hole green fee is €82.50, which puts it in the mid range for the Netherlands. When you have finished, the clubhouse restaurant is there for a quiet lunch or a drink among the trees. Buggy and club rental are available if you travel light or want to save your legs on the rolling holes.

Marina's note for learners

A woodland layout like this one rewards precise shot placement over raw power — the course-management habits I work on with students at every stage of the game. If you are still working towards a handicap, the shorter course and academy here are the right place to build before you step onto the main 18 holes.

Trees ask for a plan

A wooded, championship layout like this one rewards a repeatable swing and a clear head over the ball — you place the tee shot, you leave the driver in the bag when the hole asks for it, and the good number comes from smart position, not brute distance. That patient, accurate part of the game is exactly what I most enjoy teaching.

Good to know

Do I need a handicap to play at De Scherpenbergh?

Yes, a valid handicap — an NGF/GVB card or an equivalent recognised handicap — is required for the main 18-hole course. The club is NGF-affiliated, so any accepted handicap qualifies. A shorter course is also available on site if you are still working towards yours.

How much is the green fee?

The 18-hole green fee is €82.50, which puts De Scherpenbergh in the mid range (€€) for the Netherlands. Check descherpenbergh.nl or call 055 505 12 62 for the latest rates, as prices can vary by day or season.

Can I book a tee time online?

Yes. De Scherpenbergh is a pay-and-play club open to visitors year-round — no membership needed. You can book a tee time directly on their website at descherpenbergh.nl.

Is the course suitable for beginners?

The main 18-hole layout has a championship character and rewards accurate, strategic play, so it is best enjoyed once you have a handicap. If you are newer to golf, the shorter course and on-site golf academy are excellent places to build confidence before stepping onto the full course.

What facilities are available at the club?

The club has a driving range and putting green for warming up, a golf academy with lessons, and a clubhouse restaurant where you can relax after your round. Buggy and club rental are also available, which is handy if you are travelling light or want to save your legs on the rolling, wooded holes.

Can Marina Romanik give me lessons to prepare for a course like this?

Yes — a wooded championship layout like De Scherpenbergh rewards accurate ball-striking and smart course management, which is exactly what Marina focuses on in her lessons. Marina teaches at Chi Chi Golf in Utrecht and Golfschool Hoenderdaal in Driebergen; book a lesson there and you will arrive at Scherpenbergh ready to make the most of it.
