Colt’s heathland, since 1894

Golfclub De Pan sits in the Panbos forest at Bosch en Duin, on the sandy ridge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Harry S. Colt laid out the 18 holes here, and the club goes back to 1894 — this is old, classic golf. From the club’s own description, the course runs over rolling, sand-based ground through heather and pine, with deer and foxes for neighbours and a thatched clubhouse at its heart. The par is 72.

Golfers on LeadingCourses give it 8.6 out of 10 from 379 ratings, and Hole19 golfers score it 4.8 out of 5 across 102 reviews (checked 25 September 2026). Leading Courses also named it Golfers’ Choice 2026 — number 2 in Utrecht and number 10 in the whole of the Netherlands.

The 6th is the hole golfers remember: a blind tee shot toward a tree-marked cross, then a demanding approach to the green.

De Pan is a championship heathland course. It rewards experience, patience and good course management, so it suits established golfers most of all. If your game is still growing, a few lessons first will make a round here far more enjoyable.

De Pan is a private members’ club, so a visitor plays by introduction through a member, and a valid handicap — a Dutch GVB card or international equivalent — is checked before you go out. The green fee is €175 for 18 holes, tee times can be booked online, and the club is open year-round. It is a nine-minute drive from Utrecht.

For practice there is a driving range, a putting green and a golf academy, with a pro shop, restaurant and terrace in the clubhouse.

The reward of a repeatable swing

Colt built De Pan to test judgement, not muscle. The heather punishes a wild tee shot and the greens ask for a soft, controlled approach. Before a round on ground like this, I most enjoy working with players on a repeatable swing and smart course management — knowing when to leave the driver in the bag. That is where good scores on a championship heath really come from.
