Heathland on Den Treek

Golfclub De Hoge Kleij sits on the historic Den Treek estate in Leusden, in the province of Utrecht. It opened in 1985 and gives you a full 18 holes of heathland golf, par 72, shaped by two respected designers — Frank Pennink and Donald Steel. The course plays to 6,045 metres with a slope of 128, so it is a round that rewards a steady, thoughtful game more than raw power. Leusden is about 17 minutes by car from Utrecht.

Golfers rate it warmly. On LeadingCourses it scores 8.5 out of 10 from 457 ratings, and on Hole19 it earns 4.8 out of 5 from 52 ratings (checked 26 September 2026). Reading those numbers together, this is a course players come back to and enjoy.

It suits golfers who already play with some confidence and love a calm, natural setting. The heathland lines and the estate trees ask you to plan each shot, which is exactly what makes a round here satisfying.

Playing as a guest

De Hoge Kleij is an introduction club, so a visitor needs two things: a valid handicap, and to be introduced by or accompanied through a member. Visitors are welcome and tee times can be booked online. The green fee is in the premium range — around €150 for 18 holes and €40 for 9.

For practice there is a driving range, a putting green, a short-game area and a golf academy, with a restaurant, bar and terrace to enjoy after your round. Buggies and clubs are available to rent, so you can arrive light.

Marina's note for learners

De Hoge Kleij rewards course management over power — exactly what I work on with students at Chi Chi Golf and Hoenderdaal before they take on a slope-128 layout like this one. You need a valid handicap and a member introduction before you visit, so arrange both in advance.

Position over power

A heathland layout with a slope of 128 asks for control, not distance. Keep the ball in play off the tee, give yourself a clear line in, and the round opens up. That balance — a repeatable swing and smart course management — is the part of the game I most enjoy helping golfers build before they take on a course like this one.

Is the course suitable for beginners?

The 18-hole heathland layout has a slope of 128 and plays to par 72, so it is best suited to golfers who already play with confidence. A few lessons to build a repeatable swing and solid course management will make a real difference before you tackle a layout like this.

Can Marina Romanik give me a lesson at De Hoge Kleij?

Marina teaches at Chi Chi Golf in Utrecht and Golfschool Hoenderdaal in Driebergen — both an easy drive from Leusden. A lesson or two there is a great way to build the course-management skills a slope-128 heathland round rewards. Book online, WhatsApp, or give her a call.
