Golfclub De Haar sits in a 58-hectare park in Haarzuilens, just west of Utrecht — about ten minutes by car from the city. Frank Pennink and Bruno Steensels laid out these 18 holes, which opened in 1974, and the trees have had decades to grow into them: old oaks, chestnuts, beeches, lindens and even sequoias line the fairways. It is a par 71 that measures 5,705 metres, and the course was GEO-certified in 2018 for how carefully the grounds are kept.
Golfers rate it warmly. On LeadingCourses it holds 8.3 out of 10 from 199 ratings, and on Hole19 it scores 4.7 out of 5 from 93 reviews. The two holes people remember most are the 7th, a par 4 that plays over water, and the closing par-5 18th, which gives you a direct view of the towers of Kasteel De Haar as you walk to the green. Not many rounds finish beside a fairy-tale castle.
This is a course with real teeth. The slope is 142 and the course rating 69.8, so it rewards a player who already has a handicap and enjoys a proper test — the tree-lined fairways ask for accuracy, not just power. If you are further along in your game, you will love it here. And if you are still building your golf, think of De Haar as a wonderful goal to play towards: a place worth getting ready for.
De Haar is pay-and-play, so you can book a round as a guest without a member introducing you — you do need a valid handicap card. A green fee for 18 holes is around €126, and the course plays year-round. Before your round there is a driving range and a putting green to warm up, a golf academy on site, and a restaurant with a terrace to enjoy afterwards. Buggies and trolleys are available if you want them.
★ Suits: experienced golfers with a valid handicap card, strategic players who enjoy tree-lined accuracy, and those working towards a genuine par 71 challenge.

Marina's note for learners
I send students here when they are ready to test their course management — it is just ten minutes from Chi Chi Golf in Utrecht, so we often plan a lesson together before their round. The water carry on hole 7 and the tree-lined fairways reward exactly the smart positioning and controlled swing we work on.

Those narrow, tree-lined fairways and a slope of 142 mean De Haar rewards control over raw distance — a straight, repeatable swing and a calm head under the trees will do far more here than trying to overpower it. Placing your ball off the tee, and shaping smart shots into greens like the 7th over water, is exactly the kind of course-strategy I most enjoy helping golfers with before a round on a course this pretty.

De Haar is a genuine challenge — par 71, slope 142, with tree-lined fairways that reward accuracy over power. It is most enjoyable once you have a handicap and some experience. Think of it as a great goal to aim for: a few lessons first will make the water carry on the 7th and the castle-view 18th a real pleasure.
The club has a driving range, putting green, a golf academy with PGA instruction, a restaurant and bar terrace, buggy and trolley rental, and on-site parking. The GEO-certified grounds are kept beautifully year-round.
The course is at Parkweg 5, 3455 RH Haarzuilens — about 10 minutes by car from Utrecht city centre. The towers of Kasteel De Haar are easy to spot on the way. Parking is available on site.
Yes — Marina teaches at Chi Chi Golf in Utrecht and Golfschool Hoenderdaal in Driebergen, both an easy drive from De Haar. A lesson or two beforehand is a great way to sharpen your course management and get the most out of De Haar's challenging par 71 and beautiful castle setting.
