Heathland golf since 1981

From the club’s own website, Golfbaan de Swinkelsche is an 18-hole heathland course near Someren in Noord-Brabant, laid out in two loops and founded in 1981. Heathland means open, sandy ground with heather and fine grasses — the kind of turf that lets the ball run and asks you to think about where it lands, not only how far it flies. The club is NGF-affiliated and lists the course as a full-length round, so it plays as a proper test for golfers who already have their card.

Golfers on Tripadvisor rate it 4.3 out of 5 from 13 reviews — a warm, steady score for a club this size. The club also runs its own golf academy on site, with a driving range, a putting green, a short-game area and practice bunkers, so a whole day of golf and practice fits into one visit.

Who does it suit? Players with a handicap and a settled swing will enjoy the heathland loops most — that is where the course shows its character. But there is a real welcome for newer golfers too. The club has a par-3 short course, where you can walk a full round without the pressure of the long holes, and the academy is right there when you want a lesson. Add a clubhouse with a restaurant, a bar and a terrace, and you have a club that makes a morning easy to enjoy.

Playing as a visitor

The club welcomes visitors, and the way in is simple. De Swinkelsche is NGF-affiliated and asks for a valid GVB or handicap registration to play the 18-hole course — this is a real golf course, not a pay-and-walk-on. You book your tee time online through the club’s website, and the green fee is €75 for 18 holes or €47.50 for 9. Buggies and trolleys are available to hire, and the course stays open all year round, so a soft winter’s day is as playable as summer.

If you are still working toward your GVB, the par-3 course and the academy give you a friendly place to start — you can enjoy the club long before you play the full loops.

Marina's note for learners

Heathland golf rewards placement over power — the open ground runs the ball and punishes a wayward shot more than a parkland fairway would. A few sessions on course management and a repeatable swing are the best preparation I know for a round like this.

Preparing for the heath

Heathland golf rewards a swing you can repeat, because the open ground and the run on the ball punish a wild strike more than a soft parkland fairway would. Course management matters here as much as power — knowing where to aim and when to take less club. That balance of a steady swing and clear thinking is exactly the part of the game I most love to teach, and a lesson or two beforehand is the quickest way to arrive at Golfbaan de Swinkelsche ready to enjoy every hole.
